“Living with the dead”, Cairo, Dec. 8th, 2010

The Israel cemetery was not special in terms of graves but in terms of location. Right at the old city wall with good view to the olive tree mountain.

The Cairo cemetery is special. It used to be a regular one but over time, due to earthquakes and other destructions the poor of the poor could not afford there homes anymore. The government did not help but allowed them to move onto the area of the cemetery. Over the years they built their little houses, garages and shops between the graves and live among the dead. There are no people on the pictures as the adults hided from me and the children left after I did not follow their wish for money. But they do live here, I saw it.
